Exploring Istanbul by Private Car: A Bosphorus Day Tour Guide (2026)

Two continents, one Strait, endless highlights — here's how to see the best of Istanbul in a single day.

City Guide May 2026 · 8 min read

Istanbul is the only city in the world straddling two continents — and the Bosphorus Strait divides them dramatically. A private car tour lets you explore both sides, move at your own pace, stop wherever you like and avoid the crowds that swamp tourist buses.

This is our recommended full-day itinerary for an Istanbul Bosphorus tour by private car with driver.

Istanbul Bosphorus Bridge at Night — Tour Guide

Morning: European Side Highlights (9:00–13:00)

Sultanahmet — The Historic Heart (9:00–11:00)

Start at Sultanahmet. Your driver will park while you visit the Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Camii), Hagia Sophia and the views over the Sea of Marmara. Even 30 minutes outside is spectacular before the crowds arrive. Note: Hagia Sophia requires queue time in peak season.

Grand Bazaar (11:00–12:00)

A 10-minute drive takes you to the Grand Bazaar — one of the world's oldest and largest covered markets. Spices, ceramics, jewellery and textiles. Your driver waits while you explore.

Spice Market & Galata Bridge (12:00–13:00)

Head to Eminönü and the Spice Bazaar (Egyptian Bazaar) for a taste of Istanbul's food culture. Walk across the Galata Bridge overlooking the Golden Horn and the old city skyline.

Lunch: Bosphorus View (13:00–14:30)

Drive north along the European Bosphorus shore to Bebek or Ortaköy for lunch at a waterfront restaurant. Your driver knows the best spots. Ortaköy's famous kumpir (stuffed baked potato) stalls are just a short walk from the Ottoman-era mosque by the water.

Afternoon: Bosphorus Shore & Bridge Views (14:30–17:00)

Ortaköy & the Bosphorus Bridge (14:30–15:30)

The view of the Bosphorus Bridge (now officially the 15 July Martyrs Bridge) from Ortaköy is one of Istanbul's most photographed scenes. Your driver can position you for the perfect angle.

Rumeli Hisarı Fortress (15:30–16:15)

Drive north to the 15th-century Ottoman fortress built by Mehmet II before the conquest of Constantinople. Dramatic stone towers right on the water's edge.

Sarıyer & Bosphorus Views (16:15–17:00)

Continue to Sarıyer at the northern edge of Istanbul where the Bosphorus opens into the Black Sea. Quieter than central Istanbul, with excellent seafood restaurants and village-like atmosphere.

Evening Option: Asian Side (17:00–19:00)

Cross the Bosphorus Bridge to the Asian side for a completely different feel. Kadıköy's market street (Moda district) is vibrant and local — the city's trendiest neighbourhood for evening dining and drinks. Or visit Çengelköy for a quieter Bosphorus dinner with a view back to the European skyline.

Your driver drops you at your hotel at the end of the day — no navigation worries.
