Large cruise ships dock at Galataport, the redeveloped waterfront in Karaköy and Tophane on the European shore of the Bosphorus, in the Beyoğlu district. The passenger terminal is built below ground level, with the promenade, shops and the Istanbul Modern museum above it. Galata Tower and Istiklal Street are a short uphill walk, and the Old City lies just across the Galata Bridge.
The port's central position is a real advantage: from the gangway you are closer to Sultanahmet and Taksim than almost any hotel district. The catch is traffic around the waterfront and narrow streets behind it, so having a driver who knows the approach roads and the pick-up area saves a lot of time on busy ship days.

On the last morning, passengers leave the ship in groups and collect their luggage in the terminal, which can take a while on a busy day. Add around an hour for the drive to Istanbul Airport and the recommended three hours at the airport for international flights, and it becomes clear why an early-morning flight is risky. Galataport is roughly 40 km from Istanbul Airport (IST). The drive usually takes about 45–60 minutes, and longer at weekday rush hours. Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) is on the Asian side, around 50 km away, and typically takes 60–90 minutes because the route crosses the Bosphorus.
How early should I leave the ship for my flight?
Allow time for disembarkation and luggage collection (your cruise line gives you a slot), then about an hour of driving, and plan to reach the airport around three hours before an international departure.
