Which "City Center" Do You Mean?
Istanbul does not have one downtown. Ask five locals where the centre is and you may get five answers, so before choosing how to travel from Istanbul Airport (IST), it helps to know which area your hotel is in:

- ✓Kadıköy & the Asian side — a lively, local side of the city across the Bosphorus.
Istanbul Airport lies about 35–50 km north-west of all of these, near the Black Sea. Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) is the city's second airport, on the Asian side — closer to Kadıköy, further from the European districts.

Option 1: Metro (M11 + M2)
The M11 metro runs from Istanbul Airport towards the city and connects with the M2 at Gayrettepe. From there the M2 continues to Levent, Şişli, Taksim and on across the Golden Horn. It is the cheapest option and avoids road traffic, but you will need an İstanbulkart or a ticket from the machines, and at least one change with your luggage. For Sultanahmet, Karaköy or Beşiktaş, add a further tram, funicular or bus ride. Expect well over an hour to most hotels.
Option 2: Havaist Airport Bus
Havaist buses leave from the arrivals level to several points in the city, including Taksim, Beşiktaş, Sultanahmet-area stops and the Asian side. Coaches have luggage holds, and some lines run through the night, but the bus stops at a terminus rather than your hotel, and journey times grow with traffic. Check the current Havaist lines and timetables before you fly.
Option 3: Taxi or Uber
Taxis wait outside arrivals and run on the official meter; motorway and bridge tolls are added. Yellow, turquoise and black taxis have different tariffs. The Uber app works in Istanbul, but mostly hails the same licensed taxis at the metered fare. Option 4: Private Transfer
A pre-booked private transfer is the simplest way into the centre: your driver waits in the arrivals hall with your name, carries your luggage and drives you to the hotel entrance — including hotels in the narrow streets of the Old City or Galata, where the driver stops at the nearest accessible point. The price is agreed before you land and does not change with traffic. A Mercedes Vito seats up to seven passengers, so for families and groups the cost per person often ends up close to public transport.
