Taking a Taxi from Istanbul Airport
After you clear customs at Istanbul Airport (IST), the simplest way into the city is by car, and plenty of travellers just walk out to the taxi rank. That is a perfectly reasonable choice — as long as you know how the fare works and what to watch out for. How Istanbul Taxi Fares Work
Istanbul taxis are metered. The tariff — a starting fee, a price per kilometre and a minimum fare — is set by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) and is revised from time to time, so any figure you read online can quickly go out of date. On top of the meter you pay any motorway and bridge tolls the taxi passes through.
The airport is roughly 40–50 km from Taksim and Sultanahmet, so the fare into the centre is significant. It changes with:
- ✓The taxi type — yellow, turquoise and black taxis have different tariffs (see below).
- ✓Traffic — the meter keeps running in slow traffic, and the roads into the city are busy at rush hour.
- ✓The route — a longer route means a higher fare.
- ✓Tolls — especially if you are heading to the Asian side across a Bosphorus bridge.
For an approximate figure, ask the driver for an estimate before you leave, or check the current İBB tariff. If you would rather know the full price before you land, a private transfer is fixed per vehicle: from €40 to Taksim and from €40 to Sultanahmet, tolls included.
Yellow, Turquoise and Black Taxis
Istanbul has three main classes of taxi:

At the airport you may be directed to whichever class is next in the queue. If you prefer a particular type, say so to the taxi dispatcher before you get in. A standard taxi seats up to four passengers; larger families often need two cars or a van.
Where Is the Taxi Rank?
The official taxi rank is outside the arrivals level. After customs, follow the Taxi signs through the arrivals hall. Do not accept offers from people who approach you inside the terminal — licensed taxis wait at the rank. Paying by Card or Cash
Many taxis now carry a card terminal, but not every driver will accept a card and machines are sometimes "out of order". Ask before you get in and keep some Turkish lira with you — a cash machine in the arrivals hall is the easiest place to get some. Pay attention when handing over banknotes and count your change.
Uber and BiTaksi at the Airport
Both apps work in Istanbul, but mainly to call licensed yellow, turquoise or black taxis. The fare is still normally the taxi meter fare, and waiting times at the airport vary. Common Taxi Problems and How to Avoid Them
Most airport taxi rides are uneventful, but these are the problems travellers report most often:
- ✓"The meter is broken." Insist on the meter, or get out and take the next taxi.
- ✓A round-figure offer instead of the meter — usually higher than the metered fare.
- ✓A long detour — follow the route on your phone's map.
- ✓Banknote mix-ups — hand over notes one by one and say the amount out loud.
- ✓Unofficial drivers offering rides in the terminal — use the rank or a pre-booked service.
Taxi or Fixed-Price Transfer?
For a solo traveller with a small bag who does not mind the meter, a taxi is fine. A pre-booked private transfer makes more sense when you want to know the price in advance, travel with family or several suitcases, need a child seat, land late at night or simply do not want to negotiate after a long flight.
