Make the Most of a Long Connection
Istanbul Airport (IST) is one of the world's great transfer hubs, and many journeys include a connection of six, eight or even twelve hours. You can spend that time in the terminal — or step outside and see the Blue Mosque, the Bosphorus and the Galata Bridge before your next flight.
The challenge is timing. The airport is about an hour from the old city, and public transport to Sultanahmet needs several changes. With a private car and driver booked by the hour, you walk out of arrivals, get into the car and go — and the driver keeps an eye on the clock so that you are back at departures with plenty of time to spare.
Before You Leave the Airport: Checklist
- ✓Entry rules — to leave the airport you pass Turkish passport control. Whether you need a visa or e-visa depends on your passport; check the official e-visa site (evisa.gov.tr) or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs before you travel.
- ✓Checked bags — ask your airline whether your suitcases are checked through to your final destination. If they are, you do not need to collect them.
- ✓Hand luggage — keep it light. The airport has paid left-luggage services, or you can usually leave bags in the vehicle, which stays with your driver.
- ✓Boarding pass — if possible, get the boarding pass for your onward flight before you leave, or check in online.
- ✓Time back at the airport — plan to be at departures at least 2.5–3 hours before an international flight to allow for check-in, security and passport control.
How Many Hours Do You Need?
Subtract the time for arrival formalities (30–60 minutes), the drive in and out (about an hour each way to the old city) and the time you need at the airport before departure. What is left is your time in the city:

6-hour layover: a taste of the old city
Only if your flight is on time and passport control is quick. Drive along the old city walls and the Golden Horn to Sultanahmet, walk around the square between the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia, have a tea, and head back. Agree a firm departure time with your driver before you start.
8-hour layover: Sultanahmet highlights
Sultanahmet Square, a visit inside the Blue Mosque (outside prayer times) or the Basilica Cistern, a walk to the gates of Topkapı Palace, then lunch nearby. On the way back, a short stop at the Galata Bridge for the view across the Golden Horn.
12-hour layover: old city and the Bosphorus
Morning in Sultanahmet, the Grand Bazaar or the Spice Bazaar, lunch in Karaköy, then a drive along the Bosphorus shore through Beşiktaş, Ortaköy and Bebek — or a short public Bosphorus ferry ride while your driver meets you at the other pier. How the Booking Works
A layover visit is booked as car rental with driver — a car and driver for a set number of hours, starting at the arrivals hall and ending at departures. Hourly packages start from 2 hours; most layovers need a 4-hour or 8-hour booking. Send us your arrival and departure flight numbers and we will suggest the right duration and give you a fixed quote before you travel. We track your arriving flight, so the driver is there even if you land early or late.
If you only need a ride into town and back at set times, two separate transfers can also work — for example the Istanbul Airport to Sultanahmet transfer in each direction.
Overnight Layovers and Changing Airports

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I visit Istanbul during a 7-hour layover?
Usually yes, if you are allowed to enter Turkey and your bags are checked through. After passport control and the drive, you will have roughly two to three hours in the city — enough for a short look at the old town. With a car waiting for you, no time is lost on transport connections.
How long does passport control take at Istanbul Airport?
It varies with the time of day and the number of flights landing together — from a few minutes to an hour or more at peak times. Build this into your plan in both directions.
Do I need a visa to leave the airport?
That depends on your nationality. Many visitors can enter visa-free or with an e-visa, but the rules differ by passport and change from time to time. Check the official Turkish e-visa website (evisa.gov.tr) or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs before you travel. If you stay airside, you do not pass Turkish passport control.
Where do I leave my bags during a layover tour?

What if traffic makes me late for my flight?
