These times are for driving only and do not include the border. Waiting at the crossing can be short on a quiet weekday and much longer on summer weekends and public holidays in either country, so we never promise an exact arrival time. We plan the departure to avoid the busiest hours where possible.
Border Crossings: Kapıkule and Malko Tarnovo
Two crossings are relevant for most trips:
- ✓Dereköy – Malko Tarnovo, via Kırklareli: usually the most direct way to Burgas and the southern coast, on a quieter but winding mountain road.
- ✓Kapıkule – Kapitan Andreevo, near Edirne: the main motorway crossing towards Plovdiv and Sofia, with heavier traffic and more facilities.
At the border everyone presents their own passport. Turkish exit and Bulgarian entry checks are carried out on both sides, and the vehicle is inspected as usual. The paperwork for the vehicle is handled by us; the documents for each traveller are not.
From Istanbul Airport Straight to Your Hotel in Bulgaria
You do not need to stay a night in Istanbul. Your driver meets you in the arrivals hall at Istanbul Airport (IST) with a name sign — see Istanbul Airport transfer for the meeting point — or at Sabiha Gökçen (Sabiha Gökçen transfer). IST, on the European side north of the city, is the more convenient airport for Bulgaria. Flight tracking, luggage help and 60 minutes of free waiting are included.

Which Vehicle?
Families and small groups travel in a Mercedes Vito for up to 7 passengers. Planning Tips
Book early for July and August, when the coast is at its busiest. If you are travelling back to Istanbul for a flight, leave plenty of spare time for the border and plan to arrive at the airport around three hours before an international departure. How long does it take to drive from Istanbul to Burgas?
Burgas is roughly 330 km from Istanbul. Driving time is approximately 5–6 hours, plus the time spent at the border. Border waiting varies a lot with the day and season, so we give you a realistic estimate when you book rather than a guaranteed arrival time.
Which border crossing do you use?
For Burgas and the southern Black Sea coast the most direct crossing is usually Dereköy – Malko Tarnovo. For Sofia and Plovdiv, and sometimes for the coast when that route is busy, we use Kapıkule – Kapitan Andreevo near Edirne. The driver chooses the best option on the day.
Do I need a visa to travel from Turkey to Bulgaria?
That depends on your nationality. Bulgaria is an EU member state and applies Schengen entry rules at the border. Each passenger is responsible for a valid passport and any visa; please check the official requirements for your nationality before booking.
Can you pick us up at Istanbul Airport and drive straight to Bulgaria?
