10 Tips for Arriving at Istanbul Airport
Istanbul Airport is huge — plan extra time
The terminal is enormous. After landing it can take 20–35 minutes to walk from your gate to passport control, before you even reach baggage claim. Don't rush, and don't assume that "just clearing arrivals" will be quick.
Passport control can have long queues
Immigration queues at peak times, especially mornings and evenings, can take 30–60 minutes. Some passport holders can use e-gates where available. Factor this into any onward plans.
Check your visa requirements before you fly
Whether you need a visa depends on your nationality: many visitors, including citizens of most EU countries, the UK and the US, can currently enter visa-free for short stays, while others need an e-visa. Rules change, so always check the official Turkish e-visa website (evisa.gov.tr) or your nearest Turkish consulate before you travel.
Your transfer driver waits at arrivals — with a sign
If you've booked a private transfer, your driver waits in the welcome area at the arrivals exit with a sign showing your name. The exact spot is explained on our airport meeting points page. If you can't find the driver, message on WhatsApp straight away.
ATMs and currency exchange are in the terminal
You'll find ATMs and exchange desks after customs. Turkish lira (TRY) is useful for small purchases and public transport; airport exchange rates are usually less favourable than in the city, so change only what you need.
Free Wi-Fi is available — connect before you leave
Istanbul Airport offers free Wi-Fi. Connect in the terminal to message your driver or hotel and check your address. Our vehicles also have on-board Wi-Fi.
Share your flight number when you book
Give your flight number to your hotel or transfer company. Drivers then track the real landing time and know which arrivals exit to use — especially helpful if your flight is delayed or diverted.
Don't accept unofficial taxi offers

The city is 40–50 km away — it takes time

Landing late or connecting? Plan ahead
