Istanbul Airport (IST) is one of the world's largest airports by terminal size. It can feel overwhelming — especially if it's your first visit to Turkey. Here are 10 practical things to know before you land.

1

Istanbul Airport is huge — plan extra time

The main terminal at IST is enormous. After landing, it can take 20–35 minutes to walk from your gate to the arrivals exit — and that's before passport control. Don't rush your connection, and don't assume "just clearing arrivals" will be quick. Build in time.

2

Passport control can have long queues

Immigration queues at peak hours (especially mornings and evenings) can run 30–60 minutes. EU and UK passport holders may use e-gates where available. Non-EU travellers typically wait in the manual queues. Factor this into your transfer timing.

3

E-Visa is required for most nationalities

Most non-Turkish nationals require an e-visa to enter Turkey. Apply at evisa.gov.tr BEFORE you travel — not at the airport. Applying on arrival is not possible. The e-visa costs USD 50 (2025 rate for most nationalities) and takes minutes online.

4

Your transfer driver waits at arrivals — with a sign

If you've booked a private transfer with us, your driver will be in the welcome area at the arrivals exit holding a sign with your name. Once you exit customs and baggage claim, follow signs to "Arrivals Exit" and look for your name. If you can't find them, WhatsApp us immediately.

5

There are ATMs and currency exchange in the terminal

You'll find multiple ATMs and currency exchange booths after customs. Turkish Lira (TRY) is useful for small purchases but most private transfers, restaurants and hotels accept EUR, USD and GBP. Exchange rates at the airport are less favourable than in the city.

6

Free Wi-Fi is available — but connect before you leave

Istanbul Airport offers free Wi-Fi. Connect while still in the terminal to message your driver, check your hotel address and orient yourself. Once you're in a vehicle, connectivity is still good — our vehicles have on-board Wi-Fi.

7

Istanbul Airport has two storeys of arrivals

International and domestic arrivals are on different levels. International arrivals exit onto the ground floor; domestic on the upper floor. Make sure you tell your driver which terminal you're arriving at. For most international flights, you'll exit onto the main arrivals level.

8

Don't take unofficial taxi offers

Inside and around the airport, you may be approached by unofficial taxi touts offering rides. Always use official taxis from the designated taxi rank outside the terminal, or better, a pre-booked private transfer. Never accept a ride from someone approaching you inside the building.

9

The city is 45–50 km away — it takes time

Istanbul Airport is located on the far western edge of the European side. Even in light traffic, reaching central Istanbul takes 45–60 minutes. In rush hour, 90 minutes is possible. We track your flight and adjust your driver's arrival accordingly — no extra charge for delays.

10

Luggage trolleys are free

Unlike some airports, luggage trolleys at Istanbul Airport are free to use. There are plenty available at baggage claim. Load them up — your driver will help you with bags at the arrivals exit.

Pre-Book Your Transfer — Skip the Taxi Queue

Your driver will be waiting with a name sign. Fixed price from €55 — no meter, no surprises.
